Pet Collection, Part II : Where To Find Ethical Pet Products

Hello friends and welcome to the very first Giving Tuesday blog!

If you're new around these parts and not entirely sure what this "Giving Tuesday" stuff is all about, let me clear that up for you!

Blog Graphic - Pet Collection Pt. 2 (1).png

LCC’s Giving Tuesday started back in early November 2017. I was trying to figure out how I could give back during the holidays. I didn’t have any extra money to donate at the time and wanted to give back in some way.  I brainstormed and thought of “Giving Tuesday”, the day that kicks off charity season. It falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and I decided I would pursue something in a similar light. I decided, for the month of November I would highlight a few businesses I love and who give back year around.

My Instagram audience loved it so much they wanted it to keep going throughout the rest of the year! Now, almost 6 months later  Giving Tuesday is becoming more than sharing about wonderful brands & businesses that give back. It’s becoming a community of people who are passionate about helping, supporting, and participating with each other by doing their part in making the world a better place.

Awesome, right? I think so too!

For this week, this topic has been brought back by popular demand: The Pet Collection...Part Two. Who doesn't love finding adorable and ethical pet products to purchase for our faithful, furry friends? It really is the best of both worlds! Our pets are a part of the family so naturally, we want to take excellent care of them. A great way to do that is by giving them food and products that will enhance their health and well-being and that are ethically sourced. But where on the world wide web can you find these types of products? Well it just happens to be your lucky day. Keep reading...

If you're looking to support companies who are passionate about improving the lives of our pets while creating products that are organic, consciously crafted and eco-friendly... then you, my friend, are in the right place. Let's get this party started!

For those outdoorsy pet parents out there, this one is for you!

This adorably named company builds performance dog gear to enhance and inspire exploration for their outdoor adventures with their human companions. What started off as an innovative collapsible bowl prototype led to what became Ruffwear founded by Patrick Kruse in 1994 (read more about his journey here).  Ruffwear is "dedicated to making great product, our definition of success includes embracing our responsibility to our community and to our planet."

Their products range from dog boots, harnesses, to travel beds and bowls to so much more...even "human gear". This company prides themselves in utilizing these four principles when it comes to creating their durable products: sustainable sourcing, reducing waste, conscious design, and reuse, recycle. And all of their products are rigorously trail tested to guarantee quality. They aren't messing around.

Products are sold in retail locations all across the country and online.

The Dog Outdoors is small family business owned by husband and wife duo, Scott and Jenny Daughtry. They pride themselves on quality customer care, USA-made products and a well-rounded customer experience. On their website, you will find high-definition videos for each and every product in use.

One of their most popular products is the WalkyDog® bike leash that allows you to safely take your dog on bike rides. For your smaller pups (up to 25 pounds) that want to just come along for the ride, there's The Buddyrider™ (pictured above) - how cute is that? Be sure to check out their website for a wide array of other products!

In efforts to give back, The Dog Outdoors contributes to the organization Canine Companions for Independence, a nonprofit that "enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships."

Honest Pet Products

Do your furry friends tend to tear their toys to shreds? These toys may be just what you're looking for...

Honest Pet Products makes eco-friendly toys and accessories with natural, safe and durable materials such as natural hemp and wool. They commit to staying true to our planet by using materials in their most natural form in efforts to promote sustainability and carbon footprint reduction. How was their most popular product (the Eco-Fetcher pictured above) born? Pretty simple actually!   President and founder, Mary Wolff, was playing with her two spoiled Yorkie pups and on a whim, picked up a fabric drink coaster and threw it across the room. The dogs adored it and from there, she designed the more durable and sustainable product that has now sparked an entire line of eco-friendly dog and cat toys.

What I love about this company is that they economically support hard-working individuals with cognitive and developmental disabilities by employing them to create their natural wool and hemp toys. Their wool cat toys are made by impoverished Mongolian women who live in nomadic herding families. This partnership is made possible through the Snow Leopard Trust's Fair Trade cooperative. You can learn more about Honest Pet Product's partnership here.

Products are sold at select retailers and online.

Earth Animal

At Earth Animal, their ultimate goal is to build the strongest relationship possible between you and your animal. This company was founded by Dr. Bob Goldstein (and his wife, Susan), a veterinarian who practices an integrative and holistic school of thought in medicine. In the mid-1970s, the couple started to develop natural pet products that weren't available on the market yet paving the way with their ingenuity to their business that succeeds today. Read more about their interesting journey here.

Earth Animal has a great selection of quality toys for cats and dogs made of safe non-toxic materials. But this company does just about everything. They carry a extensive variety of healthy and organic food, books, treats, educational resources, emotional wellness pet products... the list goes on and on. They're bound to have something you're looking for

Shop online or find a local retailer near you.

SavvyBeast Treats

SavvyBeast® Treats sells their signature DogStars® treats line that are handmade with the highest quality organic ingredients sourced locally in the U.S.A. This family-owned business works with local farms in New York where these yummy bites are hand-cut (into star shapes) in the kitchen of their large farm near Catskill Mountains. Isn't that adorable? Treats are available in beef, chicken, turkey, lamb or a mixed flavor option.

Fun fact: DogStars Treats are made with chia flour which claims to have more calcium than milk, more iron than raw spinach, more magnesium than broccoli, and more omega-3 than salmon. That's pretty impressive, I must say. So, basically if you want your dog to be a star, then these treats are a must-have!

Products are available in select New York retailers and online.

Wet Noses

Did you know that a wet nose is the universal sign of a healthy dog? Another fun fact!

Well, if the name of their company doesn't make it obvious enough, these folks are passionate about giving your dog a wet nose every single day. They produce USDA certified organic treats made with human grade ingredients and sourced in the U.S.A. You won't find any corn, wheat, soy, preservatives OR artificial ingredients in these bad boys!

"If you wouldn't eat it, why feed it to your dog?" This question is what drove Jasmine to create her company that has now become an industry leader in the organic pet food market. Wet Noses was established in 1998 and some of it's core principles consist of innovation, integrity, quality and eco-conscious. The type of treats vary from jerky to dried fruit to their own "wag soup". If you (and your pup) are tired of the same ol' thing, these treats will be a welcomed surprise!

Products are sold on their website.

Well folks, that is all for this week. I hope you enjoyed this post and thank you so much for stopping by! Go show these amazing businesses some love on social media.
